Germany has changed their Personalausweis / id-card to X.509 based card at
2010.

what is the obstacle that we would:
a) recognize X.509 certificates as is done with PGP-keys?
b) properly support using / handling them?:
  * browser support
  * email signatures + encryption
  * display hw-token information
  * desktop login- / screenlock support

sure there are more uses but that browser support is most important here.

It would be interesting to count population sum of each country listed in
Wikipedia article, we're talking about +100 million people here (not sure if
they all use KDE thou... :)
