Things to try:

1. use the native graphicssystem
2. disable the "maximize" effect
3. disable the blur effect
(all  in "kcmshell4 kwincompositing")
4. run
   kwriteconfig --file kwinrc --group Compositing --key GLStrictBinding false
   qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin reconfigure
   qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin reconfigure
   qdbus org.kde.kwin /Compositor suspend
   qdbus org.kde.kwin /Compositor resume

Does any of this have any impact?

If not, run "kdebugdialog", activate "1212 (KWin)" and run "kwin --replace &"
Are there any  GL error messages when unmaximizing windows?

About the login corruption: does eventually kwin crash on login (is there any
Dr. Konqui crash dialog?
If not, what's the output of "ps ax | grep kwin"?
Does it say anything like "/usr/bin/kwin --crashes 1"?
