Any advice on how to force KDirWatch to use iNotify instead of FAM? Amarok is
unusable for me right now as it just deadlocks every time it tries to scan the
collection.

Have tried setting all of the following in /etc/sysctl.conf but with no joy:

fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 1048576
fs.inotify.max_queued_events = 1048576
fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 1024
