According to
http://people.freedesktop.org/~aacid/docs/qt4/classPoppler_1_1Annotation.html
poppler has highlight annotations which "represents some areas of text being
"highlighted"".

And poppler can save annotations (cf.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20193#c2).

I really hope that okular will be able to handle pdf annotations according to
PDF specifications, it would fill a great need in floss softwares, and make
okular an even better soft!
