There's the --dry-run option:

$ python2 setup.py build --dry-run
running build
running build_py
creating build
creating build/lib
creating build/lib/h5browserlib
copying h5browserlib/__init__.py -> build/lib/h5browserlib
copying h5browserlib/parser.py -> build/lib/h5browserlib
...

You could perhaps use that somehow?
