I have recoll as my desktop search and of course I'm struggling massively with
this bug. The advantage of recoll is that it lets me schedule the database
update. I do that over night. Next morning, I have a good index. So it doesn't
find the latest stuff, but the latest stuff could go in another base until the
next indexing. 
BTW, one way to circumvent and still not be energy wasting is to send the
computer into sleep rather than shutting it down. This way, nepomuk doesn't
have to re-install all the file-watchers that block the system at startup.
