When I originally wrote this, the delay I was seeing was only a few seconds.
Now the delay is sometimes about 10 seconds or more. I notice that the long
delay is usually after having done a fairly CPU intensive action such as a
large "make clean all" build. All other activities are very responsive except
for the alt-tab. Also, the delay seem longer on a system with dual monitors. On
system with single monitor the delay is often bad but it is not usually as long
(but that system has a slightly faster CPU and newer AMD video card).
