--- Comment #1 from anton <benderamp gmail com> 2011-02-05 15:06:32 ---
I am on 4.6 final now, nothing changed during this time. More clarifications on
this issue.

1. Now I know why I receive 640x480 during boot - I have 2 monitors - the 1st
one is normal monitor (non-wide) and the 2nd one is TV (widescreen) - connected
with DVI. When system boots, X.org tries to find the resolution which is
supported by both screens and comes to 640x480 cause with all other options
screen proportions do not match (more details on this issue is here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32988). This explains why I
receive 640x480 in kdm and also in KDE desktop when login 1st time. If I remove
TV cable and reboot, I would receive normal 1280x1024 during boot and on
desktop automatically.

2. With KMS enabled when I login and change screen resolutions from KDE control
center, then reboot I receive 640x480 in KDM (which is partially ok due to the
reasons described above), and then screen resolution I usually changed to
1280x1024 on my main monitor during loading desktop process. But other options
for 2nd screen (TV) are randomly lost - sometimes it loads with its normal
resolution, sometimes with minimal 640x480 - can't predict that, and it just
never remembers its configured position to be "right of" the main screen - it
always load in "clone" mode - and I always have to reset it manually.

3. With KMS turned off (kernel is booted with "nomodeset" options - I have to
live without it due to another bug not directly related to this topic:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33146) I constantly receive
640x480 also after login, so even this setting is not loaded. This happens
every time - if I reboot with KMS - I have 1280x1024 on login, reboot without
KMS - receive 640x480 after login.

So, I see 3 relatively different problems here:
1. KDE screen resolution config module should allow to save setting system-wide
(switch to root mode), so I could save system-wide config once and forever, so
even KDM would also have 1280x1024 just after reboot.

2. KDE screen resolution config module should try to handle its user-space
config in a more accurate way with KMS enabled, cause this is rather annoying
to reconfigure screen resolution and positions after each login.

3. KDE screen resolution config module should load its settings even when KMS
is not enabled.
