They do have notifications (when you get a new e-mail or sms), and pure gtk
applications (normally in the extras-devel repository) do have menus. I've only
really noticed problems with quake3 and some other very heavy, not really
finished ports.

I just remembered: it is noticeable when some games get redirected because
their framerate drops (normally to show "low battery" notifications), but I
don't remember ever seeing flickering there to transfer between modes.

Heh, I don't really grok opengl at all. Might be a nice opportunity to start :)
