Even with DRI2 it's still a valid option to unredirect fullscreen windows. 
There are applications which perform better. So I disable effects at all 
whenever I watch videos for example.

This is one of the problems which I doubt will be fixable before we have 
Wayland.

Btw the Maemo Compositor has that problem, too. And there it is even more 
annoying as it is basicly whenever you switch the running window.
