Well, I can only tell, that I have quite big problems with mobile (3G)
connections, Kopete often disconnects out of nothing. That would speak for the
watchdog problem. Is there any debug information I should look for?

Maybe 15 seconds is just not enough (3G connections tend to have ping's over 3
secs from time to time, which amounts to quite some time already!)
