This problem occurs for me too.

Kernel 2.6.33-34_rc2
KDE 4.3 - 4.4

Root directory of server connected to /mnt/srv.
After "Open file" in kate, it browse to /mnt/srv, but when try enter to
/mnt/srv/usr, kio_thumbnail start eating 101% of cpu and I'm not able to kill
it, so whole computer have to be turned off by PWR button. Network connection
is 100% OK, this bug occurs only with KDE.
