I followed your example of editing "/etc/X11/xorg.conf", just that I used 3600
instead of 3000, because my displays are 1920x1080 and 1680x1050 (1920 + 1680 =
3600).

I restarted the x-server, and now the "xrandr -q" gave the correct maximum
size, "maximum 3600 x 3600".

To my amazement the "Size & Orientation" worked fine. The information in
"Multiple Monitor" is now correct, but I have not tried out the options, which
I agree is not self explanatory.

I now have 6 desktops and 12 different wallpapers.
