There is certainly more to it than just some minor inconvenience.  Try this:

1. Open one file and move the splitter to the rightmost position.
2. Open a few more files.
3. Now you cannot even move the splitter to the *left*

I have a feeling that somewhere down the road, the moving of the splitter
generates an event that is cancelled because the position of the splitter is
too far to the right, even though you're trying to move the splitter to the
left.
