    GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE = 4096
Is this value in KByte? Is it possible to define this value bigger? Can main
memory used for this or has it to be video ram?

a) The problem are not large windows, but many windows in my case. What is
"many"? Well, perhaps 40 normal sized xterm windows.
