Summary: Bad default file associations: KWord overriding Kate
                    for text files
           Product: kdelibs
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Archlinux Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kdelibs-bugs@kde.org
        ReportedBy: jpetso@gmx.at
                CC: faure@kde.org

I just installed a new Arch/Chakra as successor candidate for my previous
Kubuntu, and installed Kate as well as KWord there. (Ok, Kate existed in the
default install already.)

When having first look through the file associations in Konqueror / System
Settings, I noticed that KWord was registered as default application for all
the text/plain MIME types being ranked before Kate in all those cases, which is
a royal pain in the arse because I needed to reorder the associated-app
priority all of those mimetypes manually. Obviously, a dedicated text editor
can handle plain text files better than a full-fledged word processor with text
import/export capabilities that merely exist for the sake of completeness.

My guess is that the fd.o specs don't cover per-mimetype initial priority
values (or do they? if so, consider this bug a wishlist item to implement them.
Neither Kate nor KWord specify any extensions in their applications/kde4/
desktop files).

In case there is no cross-desktop clean solution, you might consider a
heuristic that assigns initial application preference order by preferring those
applications that specify the concerned mimetype earlier ("lefter") in the
supported mimetype list, or when that comparison holds up, preferring those
with less supported mimetypes. Both of those are indicators that one
application (Kate) might be better suited to open the given file than an
application that supports the mimetype just as one out of many.

In the end I don't how feasible it is to implement a proper solution, but it's
an annoyance for new users and thus a good idea to fix :)
