I see that you've worked on that layout quite a bit since 2.0 (e.g. bug 193912,
bug 177447) but the fundamental problem still remains, the actual track
information is essentially restricted to about a quarter of the applet size. I
find the track title to be most affected by this issue, as titles can be pretty
long and are one of the things that interest me most when playing a song.

As I don't like to be complaining without action, I made an attempt at
improving the layout. (No readily-usable patch though, sorry.) For the mockup,
I took a screenshot of the current 2.2.0 and reordered the elements, retaining
the sizes of all elements except for the album cover which was cut to 80% of
its original size, with the effect of having about double the size for the
track title, a couple of characters more for artist and album, comfortable
space for the calculated metadata (might even fit into wider languages like
German) and the position marker not being in some random space where it doesn't
really fit in.

I think the slight size reduction of the album cover is a reasonable trade-off
for those other gains. Have a look at the following attachments to see what I
mean.
