a) As you can open the files with kate and kwrite, but not explicit with
OpenOffice, this is an OpenOffice bug.

b) The mimetype on the remote side is only detected using the filename
extension. It doesn't read the content to detect the mimetype. This will be
slow directory listing down. The filename extension *.doc is per default linked
to kwrite.
