I also got some new information regarding this, apparently I can reproduce it
without high system load, all I need to do is switch from one desktop to
another while in the first desktop I have a konsole which is under the process
of updating, just doing cat on a really large bzip archive I had managed to
trigger it during switching (I'm using the desktop cube as desktop switching
effect (in case it matters).

I believe regenerating the thumbnails gets somehow mixed with painting events.
