I would expect that the performance in a situation like described in this bug
report becomes so bad that compositing is suspended.

Instead of checking for GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY which is basically too late, could we
watch the number of pixmaps used by kwin in our compositing checks? And if
number get's too high, suspend compositing.
