Ok I understand the activation difference between the 2.

No it is not a needed feature, it is just a nice to have, like many 3D effects
are.
Then I also believe it will not be possible to view the edges of the cube when
you switch desktops (this is also something possible with compiz).

Ok, we can keep this feature closed as wontfix.
