Save local files (if not symlink) to temporary so as not to overwrite existing
data

Here is food for thought. I had applied this patch to r488004 on
branches/KDE/3.5 at one time. It did what I described in comment #12.

I also added a new option to one of the configuration pages to opt in
to this behavior, but this is not in this patch.
