I don't think that the committed fix is a correct one. GCC3 supports SSE2
AFAIK, it just doesn't have _mm_malloc/_mm_free. I haven't tested it myself,
but judging from the patch FreeBSD ports have been used for a while [1] I think
that I'm right :).
