RE comments #1 and #2, then how come there is a mute function (that works fine)
in the KMix main window then? It isn't doing some kind of manual "set the
volume to zero" when I click it either because the volume slider stays where it
was - the sound just mutes, and mutes correctly. 

It only seems broken in the system tray components.
