I am experiencing this same problem since KDE 4.0, and it is still present with
KDE 4.1 (however, since KDE 4.1 there is no more systray problem when plasma is
restarted).

One interesting thing is that with kdm 3.5.x and the external screen plugged
in, the correct xrandr settings are used when plasma is started and of course
everything is fine then.

I think "something" should be reconfigured in plasma when the screen is
resized, and this is not done now. Does krandr do something about this
(unfortunately it does not work for me) ?

I'd happily give log files or debug traces if someone tells me what the
relevant ones are for plasma.
