Here, maybe a way to reproduce (but maybe that's another bug) :

I had a similar problem due to incorrect antispam filter configuration. I believe I \
used the antispam wizard. At the time I had no antispam software (like bogofilter) on \
my box, but that did not prevent the wizard to end without complaining and setup \
bogus filters, where every new mail was considered spam and was sent to trash. First \
I thought I had a DIMAP synchronization problem, so I asked kmail to rebuild the \
cache. Big mistake. Every mail was considered as new and got "filtered". Technically \
every mail was not lost (though some were), but that can easily result in a true loss \
when the trash is emptied.

This was with OpenSuse packages, version 4.0.82 (or maybe 80...).
