After deleting "$HOME/.kde4/share/apps/konqueror", I opened a KDE TRUNK session.

I opened Konqueror as "webbrowser", clicked the "Home" icon on the toolbar and the \
KDE home page opened.  Then: "Settings -> Load View Profile -> File Management" and \
$HOME opens.  OK so far.  Then I clicked the "Home" icon on the toolbar and the KDE \
home page opened.

What am I missing here.  Exactly what did your change?
