i seem to have the same issue. The first time i enabled compositing it seemed to \
work, but i turned it off and then back on, and trying to log back in all i get is a \
black screen. The system seems to start ok, and to be able to get access to the \
desktop i have to get lucky and use the expose effect in time to catch the crash \
reporter window, and then get the desktop back.

I'm using Kubuntu 8.04RC with the latest nvidia proprietary drivers.
