There was an update of the linux wireless extensions by that time. That change was \
incompatible between wireless-tools, kernel drivers and applications and you needed \
to recompile all three to get to a consistent working state. That change particularly \
created an off-by-one in SSID string length reporting. I assume you fell into that \
and recompiling all three (and setting kernel headers to point correctly to the new \
version) should have fixed it. from the Wireless Extensions home page:
"One common issue is that Wireless Extensions offers only source level \
backward/forward compatibility, not binary compatibility. Therefore, every time the \
core API is updated or changed on the system (kernel upgrade), both drivers and tools \
need to be recompiled. Version 27 and later of Wireless Tools can support multiple \
versions of Wireless Extensions without the need of a recompile."
If you still care about the problem: does it still happen with recent kernels and the \
most recent KDE?
