The patch works, I will commit it myself if allowed.

Here is the offending entry in $KDEHOME/share/config/profilerc:
[application/pdf - 9]
AllowAsDefault=true
Application=kde-kpdf.desktop
Preference=0
ServiceType=application/pdf

This shows that it is dangerous to run kde3 programs in a KDE4 session "as is".
I'm not sure if we force the distro's to handle this problem or find a solution ourselfs.
