If you add as much as two panel applets (such as desktop selection), even on a \
relatively high resolution (1280x1024 as in the picture) there is no room for window \
list.

The buttons are rectangular, yes, but you can fit as many as two in the available \
space.

Resize and reflow these buttons. The fact that they are all brand-new lossless SVG \
files doesn't mean they need to be resized every which way and waste a lot of space.

Same goes for default desktop icon size...
