Re: Comment #120

First I want to say that I, greatly appreciate feedback. However, that doesn't mean \
that developers will directly act on it. Which is the case with this suggestion. I \
don't think that KDE will ever implement a "Home" button that depends on the "View \
Profile". There are two reasons for this.

1. This part of Konqueror is considered to be a kludge since it mixes configuration \
and URLs. These two features need to be separated into configuration profiles and \
multiple tab bookmarks. Note that if toolbar configurations were fully supported in \
View Profiles that it would then be possible to have different Home buttons for \
different profiles and this would be OK from a usability standpoint since they \
different buttons would have different icons.

2. What you suggest is considered to be evil by all classical usability theory.

Your question is how this would confuse the user. To me this seems simple. There is \
nothing in Konqueror that indicates which View Profile you are using, so you have no \
way of knowing what the "Home" button is linked to. If I have support for the above \
two solutions, I will work on it.

So, there are two possibilities that I see as workable:

1. Have two buttons. One for the URL set in the configuration KCM and a second one \
for what ever directory that you have set for "Documents" in the Control Center -- \
this defaults to $HOME. I have a patch for this and will post it if anyone wants to \
try it.

2. Have the "Home" button act like it does in Dolphin and when clicked on displays a \
short list of "Places". This (Places) would also be added to the sidebar where it \
could be configured. This can probably be done using Dolphin code.

I should note that I do not use separate View Profiles for browsing and file \
management. So, for me your proposed solution would be of no use.

Since Konqueror is very configurable, we could do both and the user could use \
whichever one they wanted to use.

Yes, it is time that something was done about this. My patch was not accepted. \
Therefore, I think that this has become a political issue rather than a technical \
issue.
