While this solution sounds appealing, I think there is one important
problem: once the first time a change was made to an image
and a .orig file created, what do you do on the next change?
Silently overwrite the original .orig, or silently overwrite
the visible image?

Therefore I think that a simple solution right now is to
warn if any overwriting would occur.
("Explicit is better than implicit.", see "The Zen of Python" by
Tim Peters; just do `import this` at a python prompt ;-)

Because presently files can be silently overwritten,
it is important to fix this really soon (for example #59 ;-).
Actually I am surprised that this entry is characterized as wish,
and not bug, because images could be lost forever!
(Sure, everyone should have a separate backup anyway...;-)

Best, Arnd
