I've added these tests at the begginning of the project file:
debug {
  message(debug)
}
release {
  message(release)
}
debug_and_release {
 message(debug_and_release)
}
Running qmake I can see both 'release' and 'debug' printed.
So it seems that both release and debug are setup by default in my configuration.
Adding "CONFIG -= release" and redoing the tests, only 'debug' is printed.

In the end I think there is something wrong because also 'debug' should be removed by the qmake manager.

Sorry for reopening the bug, but I can't really obtain what I need!
