ok, I see what you mean.  Yes, if I just create a new blank document, I get the \
proper white text on a black background.  I've only ever used kword to open word docs \
sent from other people, so that might explain why I've only ever seen black text.

However, inability to choose the document's visual background color is still a huge \
pain.  I expect that my word processing documents look like the printed document \
will.
