I had a similar problem...but found that it was fixed after I set my Country \
Region/Language options (mine was Australia) under Regional & Accessibility in System \
Seetings. After a restart everything seemed back to normal.

Seems like it could be a Kubuntu problem rather than an Amarok/KDE problem?
