Workaround:
To recover, I find that I could.
(1) Run KDevelop and without doing anything else,
(2) use the <<x>> close button at the right of the doc tab to close a doc, or two.
(3) Quit the app and  restart it. Closing too many may cause a crash. So only close 1 or 2 at a time.
(4) when all are gone, program appears to work normally again.

Original crash case had 6 docs open [Source, source, doc, doc, doc, source]
