I encountered sometimes this bug with my old kopete 0.9 version..
I worked around this problem in this way: when it asks for the pass, I used to press \
many times che Canc and Backspace button (as if it had stored a wrong password) and \
then to put in the password again.. I know, this was very strange.. But it worked \
every time I tried it!! Anyway, with a newer version this bug has never happened..
