Yes, this still happens.  I'm seeing it too.  The PDF in my case is:

ftp://ftp.cs.kun.nl/pub/Clean/papers/cleanbook/CleanBookI2up.pdf

(should I attach files like this?), and I've attached a PS that was printed from \
kpdf.  The fonts appear to be embedded in the PS (although I can't read postscript \
very well), but they show up neither when I view the postscript, nor when I print the \
PDF.

Actually, I should say that only some of the fonts (the sans-serif, it appears) show \
up.  The serif fonts don't.

I'm working with KDE 3.4.2 and freetype 2.1.10, also on Gentoo.
