I think a different layout is needed.  In particular, I think of Check Mail as an \
unrelated operation to Reply/Forward, so a different icon would be appropriate.

I do not find this to be the case.  I can see where the idea for Left Arrow=Reply, \
Right Arrow=Forward etc. came from, but it was not immediately obvious what that \
meant.  I had to mouse over to see the tooltips before I knew what to do.
