Summary: Confusing GUI for DNS Server
Product: kcontrol
Version: unspecified
Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: molkentin kde org
ReportedBy: marcc easystreet com
Version: 3.3.0 (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: I Don't Know
OS: Linux
There seems to be two routes to setting up NS and MX records for a zone in the DNS server configuration \
gui. The tabs/panels that identify and configure these records seem obvious enough, but under the \
Records tab one can also select record types for NS and MX. Trying to add these records from this point \
is extremely confusing and the underlying model is not obvious. Why should there be two data entry points \
for each of these records? This implies there is a different purpose and I cannot discern what it is. The \
GUI for the Records panel does NOT guide the user towards entering these records properly (in fact there \
is NO guide on what the value field for an MX record should be!!) nor is there any immediate feedback \
telling the user that these records were successfully entered when they are done. I for one cannot \
possibly understand the purpose of being able to enter these records from within this Records section of \
the Zone Editor GUI.
The best solution, it appears because I don't know if there is some special purpose for having the \
ability to enter NS and MX records from within the Records GUI panel, is to simply remove these \
selections from the pull down menu of record types. That way the user is appropriately guided to the NS \
and MX GUI panels where it is more obvious how to enter these records.
SOME DOCUMENTATION IS DESPERATELY NEEDED HERE!
