I am using KDevelop v3.2.2 and have not noticed that feature, I may have overlooked it (cant check now)?

Respectfully I suggest changing the icon on the tab is not so good...
-- I am not expecting a different icon
-- it is usually an icon indicating text/source, why would it change
-- it is very very subtle and easy to miss

What I like about the asterik is
++ a quick glance shows which tab(s) is dirty
++ shows up in my windows title bar
++ usually forces a screen refresh and tab re-size/re-arrange
++ the resulting screen flicker is a nice visual cue something changed
