The first time "OK" is pressed witihin the Kate configuration the changes in syntax \
highlighting will not be applied to any open documents.  You need to open the \
configuration again, go to syntax highlighting (in the last tab) and then press "OK" \
again for the settings to have effect.

63573 - sounds very much like this fix may have introduced this new defect
64212 - I think it was in this list of issues, but never moved somewhere else
