Aha!

I suspect (99% sure) that this is because there are merged cells in the selected \
range, and that they in someway force the selection to extend to their full width.  \
That would give this extend-many-columns-at-a-time feeling, especially if the merged \
cells are not within the viewed area when you extend the selection.

Regarding the print range and the red lines, that has to be a repaint bug.  I will \
try to look into it, but I can't promise that I will be able to fix it before the \
time runs out. It's just a little more than a week to the release now.  There are \
some more important print bugs that I have to take care of first.
