Strange, afm generation works for me - even as root.

Yeah - the /tmp/kfi was due to mean being brain-dead. Sorry. This will be 
fixed when KDE3.4.1 is released.

Also, as to the Fontmap. The directory has to be known to fontconfig (the list 
of fonts comes from here), and the Fontmap file is placed into the folder. So 
kfontinst -g /home/wibble/wobble will only work if ~/.fonts.conf lists 
~/wobble - and Fontmap will be placed in ~/wobble

Well this "should" be detected by the ioslave, and a SIGUSR2 sent to the font 
server - which causes it to refresh its font list.
