Summary: LDAP-Authentication via Thin-Clients is broken in KDM
           Product: kdm
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Mandriva RPMs
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: ossi kde org
        ReportedBy: Ronny.Standtke gmx net

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

I am administering the network of a mid-sized company. We have a Linux server and a \
number of fat clients running KDE. We keep the authentication information in an LDAP \
repository on the Linux server. (There are no user names in /etc/passwd, no group \
information in /etc/group and no passwords in /etc/shadow.)

I use nss_ldap and pam_ldap at the fat clients and logging in via KDM works great.

The problems started after we had to enlarge the network with some thin clients:

The thin clients get their desktop from the server via "X -query <server>".
Therefore I had to install and configure nss_ldap and pam_ldap also at the server. \
Everything still worked fine. I can log in from the fat clients and also directly at \
the server console via KDM.

But if I try to log in via the thin clients I get the following error message at the \
GUI: "Es ist ein schwerer Fehler aufgetreten.
Sehen Sie bitte in den Logdateien von KDM nach weiteren
Informationen oder benachrichtigen Sie Ihren Systemverwalter."

If I take a look at the /var/log/messages I find the following entries:

Apr 29 09:56:02 as kde3(pam_unix)[3232]: check pass; user unknown
Apr 29 09:56:02 as kde3(pam_unix)[3232]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 \
                euid=0 tty=host21.swiss-it.ch:1 ruser= rhost=host21.swiss-it.ch
Apr 29 09:56:02 as kdm: host21.swiss-it.ch:1[3232]: getpwnam(standtke) failed.

Why on earth does kdm suddenly call "getpwnam(standtke)"? As I said above there are \
no user related entries in /etc/passwd!

The sad result is that I can not implement the thin clients at our network and start \
to have a hard time arguing to our management...

Greetings

Ronny Standtke
