Try using the keyboard short cuts instead of the mouse--do you get the same 
behavior?

Also, since your run Gentoo, can you rebuild kdepim (or just karm) with the 
--enable-debug option passed to configure?  If so, run karm from the command 
line like this:

karm 2>&1 | tee my.log

and email me the log.

I cannot imagine what would be causing this problem.
