When I use setAttribute(), it has the same effect as setting the property - that is, \
none.  The property/attribute is not set, and no exception gets thrown.

What version are you running?

For what it's worth, I use a different workaround that works for me.  If \
elmInput.type != "hidden" after I've attempted to hide it, I hide the element with \
CSS.  Nasty, especially since some browsers forget to submit inputs hidden in this \
way.  Mozilla fixed their problems in this area before 1.0, fortunately, and I don't \
think Konqueror has ever had this problem, but Opera seems to struggle with this more \
or less continuously.  Anyway, I'm OK as long as I don't encounter a browser that \
both refuses to set the type AND to submit CSS-hidden inputs.
