(The sound clip already had a track number set, but I wanted to remove it.) In the ID3-editing interface, I cleared the track number by deleting the number. I clicked away to a different track, but the track number I cleared didn't change. (I've set the option that automatically saves changes to files' ID3 tags, so the change should have registered.) Then I experimented with changing the track number to "0" (zero), and it cleared correctly. This is unintuitive. It's acceptable to continuing to associate "0" with "track number unknown," but clearing out the track number entirely should clear it in the file. Bug 70699 is related, but not the same.
