I'm afraid you haven't given us enough information to solve your problem. In 
order to get that information, you may have to build Kopete from source with 
debug information turned on (see kopete.kde.org for instructions).
Then:

For the personal picture, we'd like to see the debug output Kopete produces 
just after you start a chat (run kopete in a terminal, copy the output to a 
text file, and attach that file to this bug report).

For the crash, we'd like to see a backtrace. The crash handler should give you 
one, in the backtrace tab.
